Steve Powell is a Brisbane-based drummer, educator and author. He completed his Bachelor of Music (Jazz Performance) from Jazz Music Institute in 2016 and now focuses on his passion for teaching.
Steve believes in learning through music that you love and encourages his students to bring that to the lesson and learn those songs in a practical and structured way. He also teaches correct drumming technique and creates his own teaching material drawn from his own playing and teaching experience. These lessons and exercises are in the process of being put together in a book ready for students in 2018.
Besides teaching Steve can also be seen gigging around Brisbane with the jazz/funk outfit Scout Quartet and also the surf-rock band The Wet Fish, playing the music of the Ventures, the Shadows, the Beach Boys and many more. Steve is also passionate about funk and soul music of the 60s and 70s and in 2015 he published his first book entitled Beat Roots, which is a homage to the drummers who provided the beat for their generation and others to follow. You can take a look at the Beat Roots Facebook page here.
